Masks work best when EVERYONE is wearing them, and seem to be most
effective at preventing the mask wearer from spewing infected droplets into the air. If you're wearing a cloth mask but standing next to some maskless infected superspreader fuckstain like our "president" it's probably not going to save you from being infected.
Part of our issue is Americans are largely too dumb to do nuance. Masks are an incredibly effective tool at preventing spread when used by everyone and used correctly (not over your mouth but not your nose, not only when someone is 5 feet from you, etc.) and combined with social distancing, hand-washing, limiting indoor congregations, etc. But we like our simple rules. It seems a lot of folks think being outside makes you immune from catching the virus, or wearing a mask makes you immune from catching the virus, and then get a false sense of security and put their guard down. Truth is, all it takes is one shit head refusing to wear a mask and going to a large gathering to spread it to hundreds of people, and being outside only reduces likelihood of spread by dissipating droplet loads that otherwise may linger. But the biggest superspreader event we know of was outside....at the fucking White House!
