It's all about power, and that's exactly as it should be...
This statement might sound controversial, but if you cut through the crap, that's what politics is. It's the modern day alternative to beating each other with clubs to resolve disputes, which we will always have. Right now, it's trench warfare all over the country for the Presidency, Senate and House.
The Presidency is the most powerful position on Earth. It's worth fighting for. As you suspect, it won't be Biden as President for long if he pulls this off. He's only a moderate in the context of how radical the Democrat party has become, but he's at least more moderate than Harris. That needs a check.
There is no guarantee that the Republicans will hold the Senate. They will probably have to win two GA Senate seats in runoffs, and the Dems will run the same mail-in ballot bullshit in those elections as they did in this one. (And Tillis isn't safe yet either for the same reason.) Even if the Reps win, the Senate check will hinge on a majority of Romney/Murkowski/Sasse/Collins not voting with the other side. In other words, the Senate may not necessarily be a check. Gaining House seats is great, but it's majority rules there, so the Dems still have complete control.
As for the Dems unifying message, it was just Trump Hate 24/7. They have no mandate because they've already achieved what they campaigned on -- get rid of Orange Man Bad. While they are staring down the barrel of having Harris at the top of the ticket in 2024, that's a long way off, and a lot of damage can be done between now and then. Thank the Lord Almighty that the Reps had the stones to confirm Barrett when they did.
