I think he was hedging all along
The numbers this time were comparable to where Obama stood in 2008, but there was definitely a lot less confidence in how Silver was presenting them. I think most people looked at the polls and were inherently suspicious because of 2016. He isn't the one running the polls, so he has to trust that they're doing a good job. I sure didn't feel like it was 9 to 1 for Biden heading into Tuesday and he didn't seem to be talking like that either even though he had when Obama was in a similar position. The polling industry needs to do a serious evaluation on their methodology in the era of caller ID cell phones and a polarized electorate. Ultimately, if they can't get better all of Silver's work doesn't amount to much.
