Rural areas are shrinking in two ways
1) Those that are desirable upscale to suburbs (which, in turn, become bluer)
2) Those that are undesirable are losing population
This has been inexorably progressing for a few generations now, and is an enormous part of why rural Americans feel like their way of life is under attack. From one election to the next, larger social forces may shift the blue/red balance back and forth a bit, but the GOP grabbing on to this shrinking demographic is not a winning long term strategy.
