who owned guns, and doesn't shit my pants every time I see one, it's far more nuanced than that. I would favor the following:

-Either repeal (fat chance) or correctly interpret the 2A (equally fat chance) to remove this silly notion that an individual's right to buy any gun he wants is somehow enshrined in the constitution

-At the federal level, ban military style assault weapons the same way we did in the 90s. Don't care if it's perfect, just the principle. Require gun owners to register in a national database, and tightly regulate sales and transfers.

-Similarly, bans and strict penalties on things like bump stocks, extended clips, etc.

-Strict, federal penalties for any unlicensed/unregistered weapons. Draconian penalties for unlicensed sales or transfers.

-Leave the rest of gun regulation up to states and localities. Like most things, what works in Idaho doesn't work in Los Angeles or NYC. If NYC's citizens want to ban all guns in the city limits, they should be free to. The 2A only applies to weapons for use in state militia service.

-Handguns become the tricky subject, but our lawmakers should be able to make decisions on how to regulate.

-Everything else (shotguns, sporting rifles, etc.) far less an issue. The vast majority of states and localities are not going to ban pistols or shotguns kept for personal defense, let alone hunting rifles and such. Nor should they.

That's all reasonable in my view. No reason at all some psychotic hillbilly should be allowed to keep an arsenal of AR-15s and Tech 9s in a shed out back.
