I work with at least one lawyer who believes this nonsense. She is generally a nice person, competent at her job, and volunteers in the community. In her case, I believe she fell down the rabbit hole through her ultra conservative church, which seems to confuse Trump and God. She will occasionally say something that makes your jaw drop (COVID is a hoax, etc.).

Some people take comfort in unflinching belief in something to give their life meaning. I don't mean this in any way to condemn religion, as almost all of my family is very religious and use that belief to do positive things (help those less fortunate, etc.). I grew up in the Presbyterian church in the midwest in the 70s and it was not political at all and I think that kind of religion is generally positive.

That said, I think its human nature to want to be part of a tribe, and that can be both positive or negative. The "us against the world" mentality is strong motivator
