I wonder if the Weimar Republic sought unity with the National Socialists.

I know that it is bad form to ever make references to the Nazis when you are talking US politics, but the situation is similar in one key respect.

The Weimar Republic was founded on (obviously) republican principles. The National Socialists were authoritarians with fascistic tendencies and were staunchly undemocratic.

The Republican Party, under the thrall of Trumpism is most definitely anti-democratic. Not only does it not respect democratic institutions, it actively works to dismantle and destroy them. If left weakly unopposed, as were the National Socialists in 1930s Germany, we would suffer similarly.

So, I ask, where is the unity with these people? Which elements of our democracy are we willing to part with to placate them?
