Supporting institutions are weakened. What was never condoned becomes normalized. Appeasement is adopted in hopes that this or that concession will stop the slide to autocracy.

The German experience should be a cautionary tale for us. We must insist of our leaders that there has to be accountability now. To soft pedal that accounting is nearly as egregious as the acts of sedition and traitorous behavior themselves.
