Is it an attempted bloody coup if some of them intend to kill or maim someone and believe it will result in overturning the results of an election even though they're mistaken? Is it attempted murder if they went after someone with a plastic knife that they earnestly believed was deadly with the intention of killing that person? I'd argue yes to both. I'm not sure that all or most of them thought it would work, but I'm pretty sure that a sizable minority thought it would. I knew they wouldn't succeed in overturning the election and I've tried to avoid inflammatory language here, but objectively speaking I don't think "attempted bloody coup" is an inaccurate description of what happened.

Out of genuine curiosity, do you think that Trump thought Pence could overturn the election when he gave his speech on 1/6? He said that Pence could come through for them. Was he lying to the crowd or was he attempting a coup? As far as I can tell, it's either one or the other (or both I guess if you consider the speech incitement). Trump didn't say it had to be a bloody coup, but if you take him at face value he's advocating for a coup. From the speech:
"I hope so because if Mike Pence does the right thing, we win the election. All he has to do. This is from the number one or certainly one of the top constitutional lawyers in our country. He has the absolute right to do it. We’re supposed to protect our country, support our country, support our constitution, and protect our constitution. States want to revote. The States got defrauded. They were given false information. They voted on it. Now they want to recertify. They want it back. All Vice-President Pence has to do is send it back to the States to recertify, and we become president, and you are the happiest people."
