..position no longer conflicts with the old "small government is the best government" positions they previously projected in their marketing.

I suspect now, it s nothing more than to continue to coddle those who were brought up watching "Reefer Madness" and believe pot is the road to the devil. Also, it helps keep the fascist and authoritarians in their camp too. Gotta be tough on "crime".

Or maybe it is simpler than that, maybe the booze and cigarette industry provides significantly more in campaign contributions to the GOP.

I loved the one quote by some GOP..."this bill is too important to cram though at the last minute". Hey SFB, you've had years to figure this out. Typical Government, working on their own clock.
