I’d like to see a centrist 3rd party.
Right now, there just isn’t a place for centrists. I expect that the repub party will prove today that they are only about Trumpism - it isn’t really about conservatism. They are about to sack one of the most conservative members of Congress in favor of one you might call a centrist, except that the thing that really draws repubs to her is her devotion to Trump. So really, the repub party is not a party of ideas at all - it’s about right wing nutjobbery and devotion to a single guy.
The only hope in our two party system for a degree of centrism and pragmatism is the dem party. It has a center left and far left wing, with lots of different points of emphasis (climate change, minority rights, etc). But as we are seeing with Biden now, the weight of the party is drawing it leftward. So, I wouldn’t call it a great centrist option, just the only one.
So, if this new repub insurgency is going to bring in dem and indie centrists, I think it has to be a pragmatic centrist party itself. For instance, it probably should have room for both pro-life and pro-choice voters and candidates. And for different views on immigration. Hopefully, a party that doesn’t require specific points of view as an element of its identity.
And then, maybe it would have slightly more than a snowball’s chance in hell. Near term though, it’s probably good news for the dems if it gets off the ground.
