That is true. If you...
...do what these folks did, you are taking a big, big risk. The killing was indisputably wrong, IMO, but Babbit put herself in harm’s way, and when you do so, sometimes bad things happen.
I’d remind you, though, that these folks had just spent the last 6-7 months watching left-wing rioters all over the country attack with impunity government buildings, government monuments, police, military, stores and citizens —even occupying parts of cities for weeks. Not to mention things like LW protestors attacking the Supreme Court, occupying senate offices or disrupting senate hearings during the Kavanaugh hearings.
The Jan. 6 rioters probably expected similar lenient treatment, but that was naive — the law is not applied equally in this country when it comes to the political bent of the victims and perpetrators.
For the record, I would not charge the cop who killed Babbit with murder. Maybe — maybe — manslaughter or excessive force and let a jury sort it out, but I am generally pro-law enforcement and would give them wide latitude in violent confrontations. My guess is that gunning down an unarmed citizen who is not an imminent threat, which was the case here, is against the rules of engagement. Perhaps criminal, perhaps not, but it should not be swept under the rug as it has been. That will just fuel the fire.
