I can't explain why softball gets short shrift compared to say women's soccer, but I don't think it's because of gender given both are women's sports.

Most of the inequity in men's vs. women's sports arise from football and basketball which basically fund all the other sports that don't generate enough revenue to pay for themselves. I don't think there's a conspiracy to screw softball players.

And again, if the softball players feel that badly about it, maybe they should go talk to the Stanford wrestling team. Oh yeah, that's right, there is no Stanford wrestling team. Why is there no Stanford wrestling team? Because apparently cancelling men's sports -- even ones that are 100% funded for decades based on an endowment from private donations in response to Stanford's decision to cancel the program -- helps women. How this helps women is totally beyond me, but apparently the existence of a self funded wrestling program is bad for women.

Edited to add... it looks like Stanford overturned the decision cancel men's wrestling in late may. Prior to that decision, they were planning to discontinue wrestling despite it being fully funded through an endowment from private donations, in the name of "equality" or "fairness".
