Where did you get this part? I've never heard it before.

"Because the day is June 19 but the freed slaves didn't know what calendar days were or how to say "nineteenth."

I think "Juneteenth" is just a corruption, an elision, of "June Nineteenth", I never heard the idea that the recently freed slaves didn't know months or days the week or ordinal numbers.

here's the wikipedia entry on it. They don't mention anything along those lines.

(First Juneteenth I was aware of was in Denver around 1980 or 1981, having moved here in October 1979. At the time I thought it was a western states thing, never having heard of it in Virginia. Which makes sense, given its origination in Texas. The wiki article mentions LA and Oakland)
