I was being facetious

Of course they knew that there is no such thing as "Juneteenth." But somebody back in history imagined the ignorant freedmen declaring that they heard about emancipation on "Juneteenth." I'm not going to search for it, but that was the explanation for the corruption of the date. It is patronizing and suggests they weren't capable of speaking the date correctly.

The official name for the event, even in Texas, was "Emancipation Day," not "Juneteenth."

Edit: So I did search for the answer and according to multiple websites the word "Juneteenth" was coined in 1903 because celebrants found it easier to say than "June 19." They weren't primary sources and I'm dubious, since the holiday already existed as Emancipation Day, but maybe its true--it was just a popular way of saying June 19. But even if it wasn't invented by white folks as a way to mock black speech, it would make folks like Washington and Du Bois cringe to hear it. Emancipation Day is better and more appropriate, imho. If anyone reading this knows the actual origin of the word I'd be interested in seeing it.
