I hadn't read the whole excerpt, just the two paragraphs the guy is chiefly complaining about. I couldn't see much wrong with it. I went back and read the whole excerpt and it is sympathetic to an extent. But again, I don't tend to look at history from a standpoint of where we are today but what the prevailing mindsets were at the time, even if they were morally reprehensible. That doesn't make them right, it just gives me a better view of understanding.

In other words, I don't think the sugarcoating of the plight of the slaveowner should be changed, that was the prevailing mindset. This was basically the daughter's thoughts. Not necessarily a historian's thoughts today. If they were recalling a slave's thoughts, I wouldn't want the 21st century version of what they were thinking, either. And I'd want that POV as well. And I would think it would be there but we don't know based on the evidence provided.
