He'll switch after the Christmas recess. He's a lot of things but one of

them isn't "unable to count votes."

He has maximum power now which he loses if he doesn't get re-elected. If he's the 51st Republican vote he maintains the same level of power as if he's the 50th Democrat.

Even Stevie Wonder can see that a Democrat, even Joe Manchin, doesn't have a great shot, much less a lock, in West Virginia in 2024. But a Joe Manchin who's a newly-minted Republican---well that guy has a shot, maybe a pretty good shot. Especially if he has some Republican accomplishments to point to between January 2022 and whenever the primary is in WV in 2024

A Republican Joe Manchin in calendar year 2022 means no Biden Supreme Court nominee in all of 2022. Won't even come up for a vote, will be Merrick Garland-ed. And he'll be able to point to that in the Republican 2024 primary.
