I like to try to be optimistic and continue to hold the belief that one day

We as a country will become reasonable and rational about the realities of immigration. Immigration is a persistent problem here because for all our bitching and moaning, the US is about the best overall place to live in all of human history. And to our south are some of the more dysfunctional places on the planet right now. The reason Canadians aren’t beating down our “wall” is not that they don’t like us. Just that they are doing just fine where they are.

We will come to realize, out of necessity at some point IMO, that we need immigrants. They fill an important need in the economy that simply is not filled in their absence. Seasonal work, migrant work, day labor - when migration dries up, labor shortages reliably follow. Not to mention that if we could stop politicizing it long enough to bring these critical workers out of the shadows, they probably are the solution to the looming entitlement crises.

The politics drives absolute childish nonsense, because our increasingly stupid electorate has the attention span that allows for absorption of soundbites (positive or negative), but nothing deeper. So dumbass repubs find an example of a crime by a migrant and demagogue it into the poster of all immigrants. Dumbass dems raise their hand in support of no borders whatsoever, because why would a country ever possibly need to secure a border?

That’s the kind of partisan red meat that makes bullshit like a QR code as an organizing tool newsworthy.
