I’m aware there’s a radical notion out there along those lines, and I believe there was some discussion about rethinking the state’s approach to math instruction in part for the sake of equity. But if you dig into to the facts (and not the hyperbolic screeds from those triggered by the reference to equity) you’ll see it wasn’t about math being racist. The issue was that a significant number of kids (yes, including a disproportionate number of students of color, English learners, and poor) weren’t meeting the standards, while some supposedly advanced kids that took calculus in high school actually weren’t learning much and had to retake it (and sometimes even the prerequisites, too) in college.

Strikes me as a sober look at the facts, which then compelled some thinking about how to do better by our kids. Nonetheless it set off some (on the right) who projected racism all over it and screamed about little Johnny and Susie not being able to take advanced math courses if so inclined.

Well, guess what? Kids are still taking advanced math courses. So it was much ado about nothing.
