Both of us are talking outside our wheelhouse (LOL on a message board!)...

But my understanding is that we can develop herd immunity to a variant, but that immunity doesn't totally (or necessarily even partially) protect us from new variants. The same is true for vaccines. The vaccines were developed to address the original COVID variant, but were much less effective against Delta and essentially completely ineffective against Omicron.

A component of the herd immunity argument has been that by letting the virus rip through the population as quickly as possible, we reduce the chances of variants developing. Of course, this is the opposite of what we did.
