50 years from now, will historians look at this period as part of
a natural sociological cycle? The Gingrich post below is just the latest in a disturbing trend. Maybe society goes from no freedom, to what is perceived as too much freedom and then back to no freedom?
We had a wave of authoritarianism in the 1940s (and just before), followed by increasing freedoms, especially after the fall of the Soviet Union. Now the west seems to be universally embracing authoritarianism again (Turkey, Hungary - and I've seen anecdotally trends in Brazil, India, Poland and clearly the US - just look at the acceptance on this board).
Is this just an inevitable social cycle?
