If you want to include every random shooting, almost none of them are tied

To mental illness. This line is a lazy cop out trotting out by the “thoughts and prayers” crowd who really just don’t want to do anything that may impact their fetish/hobby/“rights.” Saying “let’s stop the mentally ill from being able to buy guns” is like saying we’re going to cut down on drunk driving fatalities by increasing the legal driving age from 16 to 17.

If we were serious about addressing gun violence, we wouldn’t tolerate a culture that has nearly 400 million guns in circulation in a country of 340 million people, where pretty much anyone who wants a gun for any reason can get one with relative ease. And because “legal” guns are so ubiquitous and there are so many “legal” channels where you can buy a gun, improving screening methods for above board purchases at a licensed store would barely even put a dent in the problem, but it’s at least a start.

In any event, trying to blame gun violence on people with anxiety, OCD, phobias, etc. is weak sauce and then some.
