Trump’s approach was nothing if not a stark departure from

Every prior engagement with the Kim regimes. None of those produced positive results. I didn’t have much use for many of Trump’s “unorthodox” approaches as president, but I thought there was a chance with NK, however small, that maybe it would bear some fruit. SK has the greatest stake in that, and they were certainly all in on the effort.

I have no complaints with it and believe the risk of “legitimacy” for Kim was overblown. The effort did fail of course, but so did all prior ones, and Kim certainly has no more legitimacy than he had before. That might be what he craved, but he didn’t get it. Trump’s bromance left him the same pariah he was before.
