In addition to all the responses below, Crimea is a unique historical case.
It was conquered by Czarist Russia around the time we were achieving independence from the Brits, and was “transferred” from Russia to Ukraine when all of it was the Soviet Union in 1954. That transfer was nothing but symbolic.
The land grab of 15% of all of Ukraine in an invasion followed by a bullshit referendum at gunpoint is completely different, and the entire world should be standing firm against that. CPAC’s sentiments are a disgrace, which they seem to understand themselves in taking it down.
Crimea should actually be a potential off ramp. Let Russia declare victory by keeping it while getting out of the remainder of the south and east of the country. Crimea arguably never should have gone to Ukraine during the chaotic dissolution of the Soviet Union. I think that could be a face-saving way out for Putin, although he seems to be closing that door too.
