Disagree. Peace accords always include economic cooperation measures, or
The peace doesn’t last. The Abraham Accords were a significant achievement - more formalizing a de facto alliance long in existence because of geopolitics - and the Biden admin was on the cusp of taking it to conclusion with formalized ties between Israel and SA.
This editorial Rusty linked preaches only to the converted. It’s one sided - Trump and bibi are part of the rise of nationalist populism in the world, and Israel isn’t in a vacuum. Trump’s policies probably would give Israel a freer hand in Gaza now, which some would applaud. But even with Biden’s attempts to moderate Israel at least to a degree, the US and Israel find themselves kind of isolated. A Trump admin might give more love to a far right Israeli govt, but Israel has its own left, and pre-Oct 7 Israel was as divided as it’s ever been.
A new Trump admin will undoubtedly bring a harder line against the Palestinians, and folks might be surprised at how many Arab regimes would tolerate that. That would also have the effect of isolating Israel further from the world’s western democracies. And increasing the polarization within Israel.
This far right guy might applaud all that, but not all Israelis would. Maybe not even most. It would be part of the fracturing of the post WW2 order which benefitted both Israel and the US, so those not in favor of that won’t agree about Trump being good for Israel, net net.
A 2nd Trump term would be bad for global democracy, and imo, that is bad for Israel. [Post edited by hoolstoptheheels at 12/18/2023 12:47PM]
