I like that Switzerland is decoupled from employment, privately


administrated, with high quality and choice. It also has real-but-not-backbreaking out of pocket expenses to discourage unnecessary consumption and bring a 'skin in the game' element. Its biggest downside seems to be that it's the second-most costly at 11.7% GDP (US is 17.1% GDP), though I don't think absolute cost efficiency needs to be the top priority for the US. The cost just needs to be brought to a level reasonably in line with the rest of the world.

Hoodafan's Singapore suggestion seems like it has characteristics that fit with American ideals, and their costs are exceptionally low at 4.9% GDP. Hadn't heard about that one before.

The tough part is which direction is the most realistic politically. That seems to be something more like extending Medicare, which might be closest to Canada.
