A hatchet piece across the entire media?

You're stretching. The WaPo, NYT and now Jim Sciutto and Jake Tapper at CNN have all talked to government sources who have reiterated and confirmed the details from the original WaPo story. There are probably others by now, too. It's clear that people in that room (or with full knowledge of what happened) who were concerned enough that they felt a duty to get this out there. These are all news organizations with an excellent track record when it comes to this kind of reporting. They aren't perfect, but on a story this incriminating, they typically have multiple sources corroborating information. When these outlets say they have talked to credible sources with knowledge of what was discussed, they have earned the benefit of the doubt.
