Sith's buddy: Trump gave a speech on my television. That is a fact.
Sith: How do we know it was Trump? Could have been an actor playing Trump. Also, how do we know it was your television? As I recall, your wife bought that television.
SB: OK, I'll add some caveats. I watched a man I believe to be Trump give a speech on a television my wife and I jointly own, although I suppose our specific joint ownership would be subject to mediation.
Sith: ON your television? Trump was sitting on your television?
SB: No, I was referring to the generally understood colloquial "on," which is widely interpreted as meaning, "The television was on, and there was a picture of Trump on it."
Sith: A man you believed to be Trump.
SB: Correct.
Sith: OK, now we are getting closer to a factual statement. But how do you know it was a speech? A speech is a formal address delivered to an audience. Could it have been a loose collection of extemporaneous words?
SB: I'm not positive it was formal. It's Trump, after all.
Sith: OK, I think the word we should be using is "remarks." So to make a factually correct statement, you should say, "A man I believed to be Trump gave some remarks, which were shown on a television jointly owned by my wife and I."
SB: I feel more comfortable with the established facts of this conversation now.
