Who had only recently joined our company.

As I made small talk, I asked where he was from. He said from Cuba by way of Miami. I was surprised. He had no Spanish accent and his first and last names offered no clue.

I asked when he came to the US. He said when he was fifteen. Again I was surprised. I inquired further. He said, when he was fifteen, his mother entered and won a lottery for a visa. She then brought my young friend, his sister and his father to the US. My friend graduated from Miami and then did his Masters in Engineering from State.

He is now a thirty something helping design medical devices.

I had never heard of the visa lottery program, chain migration or shithole countries until recently. Wonders never cease.
