Ever read The Screwtape Letters (by CS Lewis)?

If not, quick synopsis. Screwtape is a major demon of hell. The book is a series of letters from his nephew Wormwood (a minor/newbie demon) to his uncle seeking advice for how to corrupt his charge.

At one point, the charge has converted to Christianity and becomes a regular churchgoer. Wormwood is despondent and has no idea how to corrupt a regular churchgoer. Screwtape reassures Wormwood and tells him "No, this is good! We do some of our best work in Church!"

That is one of my favorite lines Explains a lot about modern organized religion, too.

While churches certainly do attract many people who genuinely want to do the Lord's work and live their lives according to the teachings of Christ, churches are also organizations that have money, power, and influence.

Access to money, power, and influence attracts certain kinds of people, too.
