I do
Heck, I could make a case that if you teach a kid how to be responsible with something when they are young, they have a better chance of staying responsible about it when they are older.
Contrary to popular belief, people don't magically become responsible just because they hit a certain birthday. Responsibility is something you are taught and have to learn.
You bring up drinking...I have tried to teach my kids how to drink. Take the mystery and taboo away, and they are less likely to go yeeeehaaaw around alcohol the first time they don't have adult supervision. My 13yo daughter and I will split a beer occasionally.
I did the same thing with my guns. Right after I bought them, I gathered up the kids and explained that we now have firearms in the house. I explained the rules. I let them hold them (with the locks still on, of course). And I've taken them to the range a few times.
Honestly don't see the big deal.
IMHO, a gun is just like a beer or a car. If respected and used properly, no big deal. If disrespected and used carelessly, lives are at stake. So we should teach responsibility, not run away from it.
