I have a few thoughts:

1) Getting rid of bump stocks would be a start and would be a direct way to address one of the, or perhaps the, deadliest mass shootings in our history (the one in LV).
2) Thinking about the recent tragedy in Florida, is there really a reason that someone too young to buy a beer should be able to buy an AR-15? That would show some responsiveness to and awareness of the ordeal those current victims are grappling with, and since school shootings are among the most haunting we see, and we see them too much, maybe that will prevent a young shooter from following through someday.
3) I see no reason why there should be any loopholes at all in terms of background checks, even if private sales and gun shows need to be re-thought in the sense that buyers don't get to leave the premises with their newly purchased weapon (because perhaps there's a waiting period) - I believe the waiting period is an objection I've heard.
4) Apparently there is a bill in the works now with bi partisan support, the president's support, and even the NRA's to require timely updating of databases, without which 3) above becomes toothless.

Those all seem like simple, pretty innocuous ways to start which will not infringe on gun ownership rights of responsible, law abiding adults.

I'd like to take it a step further and have mandatory safety features, licensing of some sort demonstrating knowledge of the weapon and its safe use, and legal responsibility if you fail to secure a gun, and it's used in the commission of a crime. But I suspect some of that runs into 2nd Amendment issues as currently interpreted.
