Arming teachers seems like a pretty terrible idea to me and I'm not sure how many teachers would even be willing to do so. I'd estimate that ~50% of teachers I've worked with won't even intervene to break up a fight out of fear of personal injury or fear of being held liable if a student were injured as a result. The vast majority of the remaining 50% have no business carrying a weapon around kids.

I'm a gun owner and I have zero desire to carry a gun at school. Part of establishing a positive classroom environment is having relationships with kids that allow you to deescalate situations and lower the tension between students in conflict with each other. This is something that good teachers are doing constantly and adding a gun, I believe, would diminish my ability to do so. I think it would heighten the tension and put the entire class on edge whenever I'm required to be confrontational with a student.

And what happens if I have to break up a fight while I'm carrying a gun? Seems like there's a lot that could go wrong there.

All the schools I've worked in have had SROs, who are regular police officers, who are in the building probably 90% of the time and that's really the only people I want carrying guns in the school. We have unarmed security guards to assist with student discipline issues but they should absolutely not be armed. They're mostly good people, but they aren't paid much and they aren't exactly Wyatt Earp.

While it won't solve anything overnight, I'm for significant changes to our gun laws. Someone on here has said they think the only thing that should be available to regular citizens are shotguns, bolt-action rifles, and revolvers and I'm on board with that. It won't get rid of the military grade stuff that's currently out there, but if they aren't allowed to sell replacement parts or ammo then those guns will eventually become useless. So we'd probably still have school shootings in the near future but I'd expect them to decrease drastically over the next 20 to 30 years.
