Aside from the 2A being far more inline with your Montana militia types
than "self defense" in purpose, I'm not too far away from you. I don't think there should be a constitutional amendment that cowards like the NRA hide behind to excuse the proliferation of military weapons designed to efficiently kill lots of people like AR-15s and I think regulation should be FAR stricter and more qualified than it is. But that doesn't mean I think there should be a national law passed saying no one under any circumstances should be able to own a gun. If you live on a farm it makes a lot more sense as you note, especially since there can be wild animals, etc. and the police may be 15-20 minutes away. But that, IMHO, should be up to localities. If DC wants to ban guns a bunch of losers from the NRA should not be able to tell them they can't because owning a gun just isn't a real "fundamental" individual right and never was meant to be. It isn't anywhere else in the world for good reason. It's absurd.
But that doesn't mean a 100% ban either -- just decisions through democratic process. And maybe more constructive and less violent means of home protection. You know, dogs, locked doors, security systems, and knowing how to dial 9-11....we don't get to plant Claymores by our front door so not sure why it's so important that we have firearms.
