Kids have been mean to each other for as long as there have been
kids. I don't disagree that if everyone was nice to everyone, school shootings (or any shootings for that matter) would likely be far less of a problem, but I don't think we will ever solve the "root cause" of kids being mean to each other (doesn't mean we shouldn't try to lessen it). But we should also take steps to ensure we don't give people with pent up rage the unrestricted ability to kill so many people so easily. If that means some people who like to have weapons of war to compensate for other deficiencies have to jump through FAR more hoops to obtain those weapons, I think that's a sacrifice we need to make.
I will also say this, I do think schools do a much better job policing bullying that occurs at school. My kids' school takes a very hard stance on bullying. But with social media, I think there is so much these days that can occur without the school being aware of it.
