Because the thought that should pop in your head when you see

someone who is armed is to be careful to not start something, not to pick a fight with them.

Try this analogy. If you want to catch speeders, you park cops in unmarked cars and hide them in the bushes so unsuspecting people will get caught. But if you want to prevent speeders, you park black and white police cars in highly visible locations to make people slow down.

Concealed enforcement means you are ready when bad things happen. Conspicuous enforcement is a deterrent. Same thing for concealed vs. open carry.

I agree, this isn't rocket science. Yet somehow, what is obvious to me is exactly the opposite of what is obvious to you. Different paradigms, I guess.

That is also why the concept of "common sense" gun laws amuses me. There is no such thing as universal common sense. A person's idea of what is and isn't common sense is going to be very dependent on their culture and their point of view.
