My objection to protectionism started in the 1980s. Mainly because before
that I didn't known what it meant. I wasn't concerned with much beyond the next Met game.
Nonetheless, Japan's perceived outpacing of the US really began in the 1970s, probably with the '73 fuel embargo and sudden shift to fuel consciousness - before that Japan was mostly known for making cheap, rickety cars, and Caddies and Continentals were where it was at. Between that, and their focus on VCR technology that our companies ignored, they started blowing past us in the '70s (in retrospect, in ways that were less true than we perceived, but we Americans always think the good ol' days are behind us), and by the 1980s, it was full blown paranoia about how they were taking over the world. I was in my 20s by then and had opinions about trade.
Which are pretty much a match for my current opinions about trade.
