Well, the US government argued in court Friday that it should not be

responsible for reuniting separated children with parents who have already been deported.

Following the court ruling that required the government to reunite separated children under 5 within 14 days (which means tomorrow), the government has identified about 100 such children in custody, for which:

- 83 kids have been linked to 86 parents.
- 16 kids have not yet been linked with parents.
- 46 of those parents remain in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
- 19 of those parents have been released from ICE custody and the government doesn't know where they are.
- 19 of those parents have been removed from the United States.
- Two of the parents have criminal histories that will prevent officials from reuniting them with their children.

The government argued that the 19 parents that have been deported should not be included in the requirement to reunite the families. The judge denied that and said that deported parents are included in the ruling.

The government said today they can reunite 54 of the kids by tomorrow's deadline, but will need more time for the rest.

So, with a focus on just 100 kids over 2 weeks, the government (roughly) only knows who 83% of their parents are, only knows how to reunite 54% of them, doesn't know where to find 38% of the parents, and thinks it's not responsible for 19% of the parents.

Think about what that means when scaled up for the other ~ 2900 kids the government has separated. There clearly was no plan other than "separate & deter."
