Schumer and Trump had lunch on Friday, Schumer thought they had a deal, and then it fell apart.

The specific dollars offered for the wall were never officially confirmed, but going back to articles from the time, there are statements such as "well north of the $1.6 billion," "the possibility of fully funding the President's wall," "reported to be $20 billion, though the Democrat’s office will neither confirm nor deny that figure."

Also, "Cornyn, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said Schumer had promised $25 billion for the wall and other border security measures, though not all of that would have been immediate funding."

As for why the deal fell apart, according to the New York Times (yeah, I know) "The immigration concessions from Democrats were not conservative enough, Mr. Trump told Mr. Schumer."

To be fair, it was a spending bill, not just a straight wall-for-DACA deal, so many reasons for it to break down. But if reports are true that things fell apart because Trump wanted more concessions on immigration, that's a tough sell IMO.

At the time (CBS linked poll below):

- 88% of Dems opposed the wall, 61% overall opposed the wall, and 68% of Repubs were in favor of the wall
- 79% of Repubs and 87% overall supported allowing DREAMers to stay in the US

So Schumer was willing to give in on something 88% of Dems opposed in exchange for something that 79% of Repubs supported anyway...and Trump (allegedly) wanted more concessions on top of that?

To be clear, I think ALL of Congress is messed up and should do a million times better at compromising... but getting that kind of compromise out of your opponent and then demanding more isn't an effective way to get things done, either.
