I think a lot of it is a result of the vitriol thrown at Obama in his term.

The demonization of the other side has gotten to the point where it's more important to beat them, and compromise is seen as treason. Everything is seen as a zero-sum game, so it's more important to stick with your guy because he's on "your side". This works on both sides, but I see it as a bigger issue from the Republican side, because of the precedents sets during Obama's term, in terms of the level of language used to describe the (then) President and the Democrats.
