It's a bit more than dem hyperbole. I've seen 2 interestng interviews.

One was with a former American general who'd been commander of NATO at one point. He said that he was certain the non-US NATO countries are drawing up plans for a defense strategy without the US. What was once unthinkable to them no longer is.

The other was with two analysts - one extremely anti-Trump, and one much more moderate, but still anti Trump (the moderate agrees with Trump that NATO countries take advantage of American largess). I have found that it is very hard to find American FP pundits who are really pro-Trump on this topic. IMO, because it is very hard to be pro-American and pro-Trump when it comes to this last week. Anyway, both pundits agreed on one thing - if Trump is re-elected in 2020, NATO will be no more by 2024. It isn't France and Germany who'll be withdrawing. As the general suggested, it could be them trying to keep something alive without the US (hard to do), as they've been doing with Iran.

Before 2008, most people thought 1929 could never happen again. It did. The prospect of NATO falling apart is on many people's minds. It is not just dem hyperbole.

Doesn't mean it is going to happen, but the sooner the Trump presidency ends, the better the odds it won't happen.
