Special elections are not the Presidency
They're not even mid-term elections, they're often totally off-cycle. They're often myopically local, such that pro- or anti-Trump is a secondary issue. In as much as everyone wants to find patterns in the data, they are suggestive and correlational at best.
They are also yesterday. They aren't even this fall, let alone 2020.
And candidates DO matter. There are wafflers among the Trump electorate who are unhappy with what they paid for, yes. There are rabid anti-Hillary folks who may claim they'd vote for a better Democrat, yes. But who, exactly, that candidate is will matter. They will have negatives of their own, and if they overwhelm then we'll be stuck with four more years of national embarrassment.
