Basic premise was that if we assume Freud was anywhere close to right, we should never be surprised at the infidelity of powerful men.

Under Freud's theories, propagation of the species is one of the most powerful subconscious drivers for our decision making. So for men, the accumulation of wealth and power is driven by the subconscious need to be perceived as good providers and protectors, which makes a man more attractive as a mate.

When a man accumulates wealth and power (like, say, the POTUS has), he does it to make himself desirable. So why are we surprised when a wealthy/powerful man gets caught fooling around with other women? That was an underlying motivation for becoming powerful in the first place.

Maybe we can be appalled. Maybe we can choose to not trust them anymore. But we sure shouldn't act surprised.
