Good points, all, but I think the WW II experience was a leveling one that


gave all sorts of Americans (in much greater numbers) a common experience. It allowed them to see themselves as Americans in a way that we have perhaps lost in recent generations.

The year I graduated from UVa was the first year that my draft-lottery number fell below the threshold. We didn't line up to enlist. In retrospect, I believe that my friends who served (voluntarily or less so) took away an experience that was paid benefits when they returned to civilian life.
