I really enjoyed this book (link)
Tracks the history of landmark first amendment cases. Legally speaking, I don't think our speech has ever been freer. Socially, the joke-policing is ridiculous, though I think we tend to over-romanticize our thick-skinned past. The virtue-signalers didn't need to write blogs about Lenny Bruce, there were puritanical obscenity laws to punish him. Same for 2LiveCrew. Emmett Till didn't get #metoo'd for cat-calling, he got lynched.
