The "problem" with the media is two-fold as I see it - and it really comes down to the consumers of news. First, a misconception about some lost golden era of unbiased reporting. I think bias ebbs and flows, and there probably will come a time when our society is less polarized and reporting seems less biased as a result. I think the advent of TV as a primary medium, during which many of us grew up, combined with the uniting effect of the Cold War, gives rise to what I like to call the "Cronkite fallacy". Walter Cronkite was perfectly neutral and trusted by all (or at least that's how we now view him). And it was true to a degree. TV was virtually non-competitive by today's standards, and the news was not a profit center. News reporting was part of the cost of doing business.

Ironically, everyone complains about the lefty news bias, but it was FOX who paved the way to our current environment. It showed how much money there was to be made in echo chamber appeal. So, yeah, if everyone cancels their subscriptions to the WP and NYT, stops watching FOX and MSNBC, etc, the media will change its delivery of the news. But the market isn't doing that - in fact, FOX had the highest ratings while O was in office and righties were losing it, and since Trump, I believe MSNBC may have eclipsed FOX, at least in certain time slots.

Anyway, I think some of your (and many people's) frustrations are overblown by nostalgia for a fictional past of media unbiased glory, and somewhat misplaced - media outlets give us what we demand or go out of business.
