"Mandatory always costs freedom". That's ridiculous, unless you think

Anarchy = freedom. There are many mandatory things to ensure people can live free among others. It is mandatory that we not kill, rob, rape, and assault just because we can, so that everyone is free to walk down the street without fear of being attacked. It is mandatory that we not drive 80 down side streets so kids are free to go out and play.

Mandatory vaccinations freed society from multiple diseases that once caused a lot of suffering, death, and developmental problems in kids. That's gaining freedom in my book, particularly when the basis for resisting this giant leap forward in public health is unfounded. There isn't a speck of evidence supporting the autism fear. Although we do still make exceptions for those who object on the basis of devotion to ancient fairy tales and superstition.

Which is unfortunate enough, as Hasidic communities in NY and NJ recently found out with their own measles epidemic.
