Dude, this is not complex. Precedents matter in this country.


What Trump is doing now is unprecedented. If it succeeds, it will no longer be unprecedented, which means it will be more like the norm. So far, that's just the case in the political realm, and the reason the vote yesterday was a victory for the country, if just a small one, is it makes clear that the political precedent is qualified. If the veto were to be overridden, then the political precedent will be outstanding. President Bernie would have a very difficult time doing such things just from a political standpoint.

Assuming that doesn't happen, the next step will be court challenges. There, precedents have the force of law. If the courts ultimately strike the president down, you won't have to worry about president Bernie doing anything like this at all. If not, you won't be able to stop him. The check on the power of the president to ignore Congress will be largely gone.
