Trumps recent remarks have provided clarity for voters.
I don't comment on matters of race, partly because it is in the eyes of the beholder. Some use race as a crutch. Others use it as a cudgel and both are wrong to do so.
This is a special situation we find ourselves in today though. Donald has, as the linked opinion piece says, exchanged his dog whistle for a bullhorn on the matter of race, white nationalism, and xenophobia. There can be no question any longer about the kind of America he wants when he talks about Making America Great Again. It is not the America most Americans care for and not the America that is described in our founding documents.
Now that Donald's carnival barker attire is replaced with the dress of a demagogue of the highest order and unrepentant racist, Americans and American voters now have a clear choice whether to re-elect a racist-in-chief or a true commander-in-chief.
For the first time in his tenure, Donald has provided a true public service. The last few days will be seen as an important inflection point in the sad tale of Donald Trump. We know now, without any doubt where he is coming from. The question is do voters want to go there? I don't think so. It isn't who we are.
