He didn't have much choice IMO and he explained why. Once he became aware
of the Weiner laptop issue, he said there was no question it would come out at some point, and he knew that if he just sat on it that close to the election, he and the FBI would get crucified if they buried it, and accused of "rigging" the election. Instead he dealt with it, quickly brought it to a resolution, and basically told us there is no there, there before the election.
I actually don't fault Comey for what he did there, nor for his "no reasonable prosecutor" presser in July. Even if he ended up hated by much of both sides for not giving them their desired outcome. He was put in some chitty positions in both situations, and IMO he handled them about as best he could.
After that is possibly a very different ballgame, and I guess we'll find out just how bad that was, if it was, eventually. Drip, drip, drip.
Comey is not "What happened".
